Axwell

It seems that Axwell has taken some inspiration from Daft Punk's Tron: Legacy soundtrack and crafted "Heart is King", a rousing gem that's decidedly less-house-ish than any previous release. . Check it out and hear for yourself:

Axwell is a Swedish DJ, producer, remixer, and label exec consistently ranked in the top 20 worldwide. For me, nothing will ever top his synth-heavy, climactic effort in "Open Your Heart". The first three minutes or so of this tune are truly legendary, and in this case the vocal mix is the way to go. Turn it way up:

I certainly can't post about Axwell without mentioning the track that, in my opinion, launched him to stardom and secured his place as a master of house music. No summer soundtrack, no beach experience, no Ibiza sojourn, is complete without "Watch the Sunrise":

Trentemøller

Nothing stirs the soul the way minimal/ambient electronica can. And no one does it better than Danish producer Trentemoller. The man's discography is loaded with stunning tunes that can make you incredibly depressed within 30 seconds, and then build you back up again by minute three.

Anders has two albums to date, The Last Resort having dropped in 2006 to critical acclaim, and the less well-received Into the Great Wild Yonder in 2010. His 2006 effort is loaded with minimal anthems, and here are just a few::

Without a doubt, my absolute favorite from the album, "Nightwalker"

I realize I say this quite frequently, but for this track you absolutely must TURN IT THE FUCK UP. Crank those speakers/headphones and truly feel what the artist was feeling when they produced what you're about to hear.

Another personal favorite, and a song you may want to avoid if you're newly single. Actually, if you're newly single odds are you will love "Moan"

Cults

Cults is a simple, almost soulful group that pits simple rhythms against catchy vocals for a chillingly smooth combination.

Really the perfect spring/early summer sound, their track "Most Wanted" makes me think of sitting on a porch, enjoying some lemonade (rum optional).

The track you've most likely already heard is definitely "Oh My God", played in 2010 on Adult Swim and subsequently released as an mp3.

And lastly, my personal favorite. When I mentioned soulful, this is what I was referring to. Absolutely moving tune, and it really helps to show the range of sound this group is capable of.

Cults hasn't released an album yet, so you'll have to content yourself with a few singles and EPs. Give them enough buzz and maybe they'll drop something in time for the summer!

Otomata

Today I came across a sound synthesizer (or as the author/creator of the tool calls them: sound events) that is far and away cooler than anything I've ever played with. Further still, it allows almost any user to quickly create fantastic sounds, often in non-repeating, evolving sequences.

These quick sequences are beautiful in their simplicity, and altogether soothing.

Elite Gymnastics

Those of you who have seen Ghost in the Shell will surely remember the rather epic opening composition, entitled "Making of Cyborg" by Kenji Kawai.

A very much underground indie group by the name of Elite Gymnastics has sampled it to make an absolutely mint indie/tech tune.

Although they primarily create in a subgenre known as "surfer chill", they've really struck out into a new area of sound with "Slime Crown", enjoy!

Sacred Animals and The Go! Team

Here I present to you two fantastic indie-electroacoustic tunes from two fantastic bands getting some attention via this February's BIRP. First, Sacred Animals with the haunting "Castles in the Snow", a cover of the Twin Shadow track by the same name. The perfect song to herald the impending passage of winter:

And then there's the musical 6-way gang bang better known as The Go! Team, heralding from the UK and bringing dance beats that reminds me of the tune that got Justice started. Star Slinger presents another outstanding remix of their banger "Apollo Throwdown". Enjoy!

Cassius is a house music duo hailing from France, with a collection of largely unknown tunes that are sweet to most anyones ears.

The first Cassius track to grab my attention was the very experimental, vocals centric "Toop Toop":

And here's a more recent single that is truly a merging of the urban lounge/chill movement and modern progressive house, "I Love You So":

Little Dragon

Little Dragon is weird. Their lead singer is Swedish-Japanese, they make electronic music, and the first time I heard the group I was sure the lead singer was a soulful black woman. In fact, instead of talking about it, here's a picture that sums up this oddity:

The range of sounds and emotions accessible in their work is difficult to encapsulate in a single blog post, but I'll try my best nonetheless. My personal favorite is a jarring song about heartbreak, love, and pain. With brilliant usage of the piano and well highlighted vocals, the tune simply carries you away. Enjoy:

Four months and six finals later I have completed all of my grad applications and my hardest (and 2nd to last) semester of college. Now I can return to my favorite way to burn time: mixing.

While perusing my folders of potential mixes, I came across a nearly complete Trance Mix 4. I'm hoping to have it finished and polished within the the next few days. This spring I'm also planning on doing another radio show on 99.7 FM WVYC with a fellow DJ and student, Martin. The format will be a 1 hour mix from myself, a 1 hour mix from him, followed by a 1 hour guestmix.

Man I can barely remember how this blog stuff works. What's the proper way to end a blog post again?

Empire of the Sun

Empire of the Sun was one of my favorite bands of summer 2009, with their breakout hit "We Are The People". They've also recently found success with "Walking on a Dream" and "Without You". All three are fantastic indie rock tunes and I highly recommend you check them out. But the odds of you doing so are now quite a bit lower, because instead of embedding the videos here I've had to hyperlink them. EMI Music has disabled embedding on the videos, ostensibly to prevent proliferation of the videos? Who knows. Probably something I'll research a bit tomorrow morning.

So while they're still getting free publicity on this blog, it's not as interactive and "free" as it could be. And the question EMI Music is probably asking is: Who gives a toss?

Philip Glass

Classical music represents a wide spectrum of genres, easily as large in its breadth as Electronica. The parallels between these categories are easily seen, and beautiful to behold.

Classical music is beautiful in its simplicity. Where a few simple strikes on a pianos keys can send tingles down your spine, and nearly bring you to tears. What Electronica does with a perfectly timed combination of many elements, Classical does by isolating several elements to their purest forms.

Enjoy now this minimalist piano composed by American Philip Glass and played by the talented Branka Parlic entitled "Metamorphosis 1". Sci Fi fans may recognize this from an episode of Battlestar Galactica.

Turn the lights off, turn the music up, and enjoy.

Justice

Justice is a French Electronic group breaking new ground in the genre. This is yet another one of the groups that really crosses genres and got me interested in Electronica.

My favorite track of theirs is "Phantom":

My second favorite would easily be "D.A.N.C.E." Watch the video and trip fucking balls:

Their biggest hit would be "Genesis", featured in a Cadillac commercial for the Escalade:

Usually i wouldn't post this many songs from one group, but Justice's distinctive sound and numerous memorable tracks lead me to post two more. The first of which is D.V.N.O., with an extremely catchy hook:

I know, god damn it's pretty good. It's like disco was reincarnated, then subsequently fucked 90s electronic music and birthed this magnificent French group.

Here's another great track, a collaboration between Simian Mobile Disco and Justice entitled "We Are Your Friends". Because Virgin Records don't seem to understand modern distribution models, they've disabled video embedding for this particular video, so you'll have to watch it by clicking on this link.

Bombay Bicycle Club

Bombay Bicycle Club released their first album a little over a year ago, entitled "I Had the Blues but I Shook Them Loose". I first heard this group on one of Blalock's Indie Rock Playlists, and that track was "Always Like This":

Their latest single is "Dust on the Ground", a freaky trip into Victorian England:

At this point it seems the scales of modern indie rock greatness are tipping in the UK's favor, but we've still a year or two before indie rock evolves into something else entirely anyways. So enjoy it while it lasts.

Simian Mobile Disco

Simian Mobile Disco is a UK based outfit that with a distinctly Electronica tilt. SMD has done work with Florence + The Machine as well as the Arctic Monkeys, and it shows. My personal favorite track is "I Believe":

Black Sun Empire

Black Sun Empire hails from an obscure subgenre of Electronica known as Drum'n'Bass, and from an even more specific subgenre known as Darkcore (also known as Darkstep) with a touch of Neurocore, but who's counting!

My favorite tune from them is an absolute banger titled "Arrakis", named for the planet in the sci fi novel "Dune".

To describe this tune, i'll let someone who commented via youtube speak:

"Darkside jungle starts and ends right here. Nothing can top this abominative drop and sulfur-reeking hell of a bassline. Absolute masterpiece of sonic mayhem."

Another huge, dark track from BSE is "Breach":

Florence + The Machine

Florence + The Machine is a project of English singer Florence Welch, wherein she partners with various artists to provide backing music to her (rather outstanding) vocals.

Tiesto, as you've probably never heard.

A Tiesto track you may have heard, but a remix you probably haven't. The single greatest tune to ever have the Dutch DJ's name attached to it, and no one has ever heard it. A fusion of 90s techno, the Crystal Method-ish Owen Westlake remix to "Knock You Out" featuring Emily Haines is currently my favorite tune.

Every song calls up mental images when i'm listening to them. While listening to this tune i imagine myself cruising along an interstate that goes right through the heart of a packed city complete with sky scrapers and memorable skyline. A concrete jungle. With this tune to guide the way through.

And for an almost equally creative take on the original tune, here's the Keemarah remix with an unbelievable drop around the four minute mark.

Turn the bass up and mother fucking enjoy.

Savoy

The old-but-new trio Savoy are making inroads into the Electronica community with their 2009 release self-titled "Savoy". Formed in 1994 and with four prior studio albums, it would seem the group is past due for emerging into the US market. This summer they're playing at almost every major North American electronica festival and dance club, to rave reviews.

Here's a perfect example of such a performance, the currently un-released and un-named track being played in this promo video:

Another speaker-destroying tune is "Get Some Action", a song that should rightfully be a rave anthem and features samples from the Beastie Boys:

And finally, for a more chilled out rhythmic synth tune, there's "Automatic":

Ferry Corsten

Ferry Corsten comes from the land of great producers and DJs: The Netherlands. He's currently ranked as the 7th best DJ in the world, and is known as an innovator and crowd pleaser.

Ferry's also known for rousing love songs, with deeply melodic vocals, and inspiring buildups. Here are a few of his best, starting with "Fire":

Next up is my personal favorite "Beautiful". If you can't sing this song to the one you love and mean every word, than you're not in love ;)

Arctic Monkeys

British based Arctic Monkeys have a fair few things to brag about. They have the fastest selling debut album in UK history, "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not". They were also one of the first bands to become big through the use of the internet via fan sites and blogs, rather than at-the-time standard marketing procedures.

Here's on my personal favorites "Florescent Adolescent", with some lyrics that are very moving to me personally.

One of their most popular tunes would be "Brianstorm", with a relatively unimaginative music video, but a catchy song nonetheless.

And finally, another favorite of mine, the deeply stirring "505".

Above & Beyond

Above & Beyond are a British trance trio known for moving melodies and gripping vocals. A stunning example of this is their hit "Alone Tonight", and one my favorite trance tunes of all time:

Another very moving tune and an absolute classic in the trance world is "Oceanic". The piano gives you chills, and the build-up sends tingles down your spine.

This weekend we'll move into a genre that has thus far been neglected: House.

Paul van Dyk

The Chemical Brothers

So begins this last week of June with a review of one of the headlining artists for the 2nd annual Electric Zoo Festival: The Chemical Brothers.

This British duo has released some of the trippiest songs/videos ever. Here are a few prime examples:

"The Test" is a tune that chronicles a girl's first experience with LSD. I recommend you turn your speakers way up and enjoy:

A better known hit by the group "Block Rockin' Beats" is an earlier form of the electronica/hip-hop fusion that's becoming prevalent today:

The Black Ghosts

Apparently bands that begin their name with "The Black" do fairly well for themselves! The Black Ghosts are a group that I first hear through an obscure remix by a one "Boy-8-Bit". They are most likely known for a more popular hit "Full Moon", popularized by the "Twilight" films. Be it known that the track proceeded the films.

My personal favorite would be "Any way you choose to give it", the song that was remixed as aforementioned. For some perspective on how these remixes work, here is the original track:

And the remix is, in my opinion, far superior (albeit lacking a video):

This Boy-8-Bit remix was one of the songs that really got me into Electronica. To this day I have no idea how I stumbled across the song, and the beginning of the song put me off (conditioned as I was at that time to hate all things electronic). Today I know better ;)

The Crystal Method

One of the groups that really brought Electronica to America, The Crystal Method has a sound that simply cannot be duplicated. This was one of the four groups I first started listening to when I got into Electronica (the other three being The Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, and The Prodigy).

MGMT

Deadmau5 and some Benassi

Deadmau5 began as a bit of a joke, he was considered very much on the cheesy side and with the exception of Arguru he produced no tracks with any real merit. That's all changed in the last year or so, and he's now well known for putting on amazing live shows and destroying dance floors.

Here's a prime example of a Deadmau5 live show, and for those who have never been to a live Electronica show, this is what you're missing:

Deadmau5 has indeed grown up quite a bit, and he's also putting out some absolutely beautiful tracks, and showing a talent for originality that has been sorely missed in the past 2 years. This is my favorite Deadmau5 track, and something i can only describe as stunning. Turn it way the fuck up, and enjoy:

And to round things off, earlier this spring Benassi did a remix of an Iggy Pop song "Sweet Sixteen", now dubbed "Electro Sixteen", the video is absolutely fantastic, and can be found here. You should certainly expect to hear it in the next House Mix or Euphoria.

Let's Have a Musical Merge

Henceforth I'll be posting lots of songs that I'm currently enjoying. Most of the tracks will either be unreleased/brand new, or undiscovered older tracks.

I post these tracks, and my own occasional ramblings, as a personal record of sorts. Today I read through my blog archive and realized how this can serve as a music blueprint, a map. To understand where you are going, you have to know where you've been.

I'm still DJ Exo, and i'll still be releasing mixes etc. But this blog now serves as a place to deposit the music that i love best, across all genres. So if you're reading this, I make no claim to know what music is good or bad. But I am the absolute authority on what I enjoy, and maybe we will have this in common =)

To begin, The Black Keys. One of my favorite Rock groups to emerge in the last few years. I saw them live last summer at All Points West having never heard of them before, and they completely blew me away. It was like Jimi Hendrix had somehow magically shit out a white blues-rock band from Ohio. Their sound is fantastic. I highly recommend "10am Automatic", as well as the following hit "Tighten Up":

The past few months have seen an insane amount of stunning releases. I've also discovered a few older tracks that were big before i got into electronica.

Here are a just a few:

Jerome Isma Ae - Hold That Sucker Down (Original Mix)

This tune has a solid buildup, and has that distinct euphoric/frantic crescendo that is emerging in trance music.

If you've listened to The House Mix 5 (Flashback), which clearly you have because you're not a fucking idiot, you'll note that the first track is an Eric Prydz remix of a pretty shitty Calvin Harris song. Really, the original is absolutely painful to listen to, which is surprising because Calvin's stuff is usually pretty solid. Anywho, it turns out the Beat Thrillerz Remix is as good, if not better, than the Prydz remix.

As I mentioned in a previous blog post, the recent changes in Mininova's offered content has certainly helped legal torrents a great deal. Here's a graph of downloads, the sharp increase occurred when the switch to legal torrents only was made:

And as of today, I've broken the 200K mark in torrent file downloads. DJ Exo mixes have been downloaded 200,565 times in 191 different countries, spanning 6 continents. Big thanks to everyone who has helped me get this far. I'm releasing the Trance Mix 3 later today and I hope you all enjoy it.

Mininova removes all copyright-infringing torrents

As the title says, Mininova.org (my primary distribution avenue) has decided to only offer torrents through their content-distribution service. You can read more about it here.

My initial reaction to this news was sadness, as I feared that the site would now receive much less traffic, and thus distributing via miniova would no longer be as effective. Today i checked up on my download stats on my older releases, and they've all gone from 10-20 downloads a day to 100-200 downloads a day. Holy shit. So I suppose this change is actually proving beneficial to those who are using the content distribution service to post legal torrents. Mininova has now filled a niche for legal torrents of primarily indie or unsigned musicians. Including the occasional mix-DJ. Me.

So, this can only mean good things assuming this download rate continues. Weekly traffic to djexo.cm and this blog has doubled as well. So i'm very much looking forward to getting back into the swing of things with some fresh releases =).

Yeah probably. I've been extraordinarily busy lately, but i'm finally done with work for the fall at least, so i now have much more free time. Free time that i will be spending finishing up this damn show. I'll be recording it in my tiny bedroom, with my commentary as i would do for a broadcast Euphoria. As usual, Euphoria 025 will be released via Mininova.org and available as a download from my website.

Long Time No Blog

SUMMERTIME.

This summer I:

-worked way too fucking much
-moved to a new house in Maryland
-rekindled an "old flame", as it were
-overused the phrase "as it were"
-didn't mix enough
-worked some more

But wait! The summer is far from over my good friends.

I've been working on Euphoria 026, which will air the first Thursday night in September. I'll soon begin calling for Guestmixes, as well as new soundbytes. Which reminds me, my shows will be airing on Thursday nights this fall, so I don't have to miss any opportunities for live shows on Friday nights.

I'm also putting the finishing touches on The Trance Mix 2, as well as the long overdue House Mix 4.

I'll FINALLY be getting a new laptop in about a month, after which I'm going to start dabbling in production in my non-existent free time.

Keep your eyes out for some new releases in the next 2 weeks.

This mix by Armin really captures the kind of energy i've been going for in recent mixes. Something in the 135 bpm range, lots of synth, but not quite what you'd call tech-trance. Full, healthy bass and a beat that demands your respect. Topped off with a melody that is seemingly childish, almost like that of a creepy horror movie. And then BOOM, the bass hits you again and you're 6 inches off the ground raving like a lunatic.

This is how i see music. It's not just a sound, it's where that sound takes you in your mind.

The Trance Mix 1 (Touch Me)

Well, i've had the bits and pieces for this mix laying around for quite a while now. Recently i discovered about 30 minutes worth of amazing tracks that i really felt had to go into the mix. I really didn't want to remove any of the existing tracks that I wanted in the mix, so I gave what i had a solid listen-through and decided that I'd be keeping this mix at a higher tempo then what one might expect from a modern trance mix.

I re-hashed a few of the transitions and basically squeezed as many tracks as i could into one mix without compromising the awesomeness of the music itself.

The end result is something that, from a technical point of view, is probably my best work to-date.

New Music and an Irrelevant Update

Finals are kicking my ass, and I've been generally very busy this year. Some quick Exo updates:

-I'm taking 6 classes and a lab, OH GOD FINALS IN 2 WEEKS
-the literary journal I work for has successfully ran it's spring print and we have begun distribution
-next week is my last week of working at my other job, Phonathon
-I am now a member of the Kappa Delta Rho National Mens Fraternity, Gamma Gamma Chapter
-my parents bought a house in Cape St. Claire, MD, so that's where I'll call home this summer.

Spring Promos, Spring Guestmix Lineup

For those in the industry, December and January and essentially the 2 weakest months for promos and new releases. Many artists like to take a break and spend time with family, or spend time in the tropics, rather then in the studio. They're also rather bleak months, so it's not the best time for new House and Trance releases either.

After months of work, I'm almost ready to encode and release The House Mix 3. A big thanks to everyone who has been supporting my Euphoria work these past few weeks, they have been my most popular releases ever. There won't be a Euphoria this coming Friday as I'm on break from school for the week and the station is closed.

My next show will be Friday March 13th and will feature a guestmix from Boston based American vocalist Marcie. Her voice has graced many of 2008 and 2009's biggest hits, and you don't want to miss this guestmix.

I've been sick on and off for almost 3 weeks now, and my girlfriend and I broke up roughly 4 weeks ago, suffice to say February wasn't a great month haha. Here's to March, and to losing yourself in the music.

Spring 2009 Guestmixes

First, a slight change to how the guestmixes are run. In the fall the Guestmix played in the first hour of the show. This spring guestmixes will play in the final (ie the 3rd) hour of the show. If you have any questions about this please ask.

If you're a DJ and want your mix to be heard by heard and downloaded by thousands of people, you need to e-mail me at thiel.ian@gmail.com.

All guestmixes must be 58-62 minutes long, at least 192kb/s MP3. Mixes must contain NO PROFANITY as this is broadcast on US airwaves. If you have a promo package or can record some soundbytes of yourself saying something like "You're listening to Euphoria with DJ Exo", these are awesomesauce and greatly appreciated.

Also, EXCLUSIVE GUESTMIXES are preferred. IE, mix the set fresh for use in Euphoria. You are of course free to distribute/release it however you see fit.

The first show of the spring will be Friday, January 23rd at 10pm EST. Use the clocks on the left of my blog for time conversions.

The first guestmix of 2009 will be announced shortly, and Euphoria 019 will be fucking mind blowing. Don't miss it.

Live Mixing, 2009, New Music

I've been considering getting back into live mixing, but am meeting with old obstacles.

I started live mixing back when I was on 640AM WVYC, using VirtualDJ. There's something about a live-mixed show that's hard to quantify, but it has a different energy that's hard to duplicate in a pre-mixed set. Over the summer I discovered MixMeister and have been using that to mix my sets. Some of the mixing is still done live but the tracks themselves are laid out before hand.

With MixMeister I'm able to mix much, much more complex transitions. A lot of the transitions you hear in Euphoria these days simply aren't possible in VirtualDJ.

So, the solutions to this are: buy CDJs and a mixer (too expensive), or start using a more advanced live program like Ableton Live. I'll be looking into this again over the summer when I get a new laptop that might be able to handle Ableton. But for this spring, shows and sets will be mixed in MixMeister.

Happy New Year by the way. I've gotten loads of new music over the past two days, and I'm looking forward to putting out a new mix before I head back to school in late January.

I'm also working on starting a line of youtube video's showcasing my favorite tracks/transitions from shows/mixes. I may also include a video of the actual mix happening in MixMeister.

Yep, that time of year etc etc.

The House Mix 2 (Secret Lover) is now my most-downloaded mix of all time, with 6300 downloads on mininova.org alone in the 11 days since I released it. I would estimate that there have been a total of 5000 downloads from other torrent sites, and from djexo.com, bringing us to a rough total of 11,000 downloads in less then 2 weeks.

I plan to release another mix before I return to school in late January, probably around January 10th i'd say. I'm really taking a small break from mixing over the holidays, clearing my head/ears and getting ready to dive back into it and find more great sounds.

I'm working on a few other projects at the moment, one of which i'll be blogging about here in the coming months.

Sick, Mixing

So i'm sick as shit today, which sucks because I have a ridiculous amount of work due on Monday. I'm grabbing some lunch and picking up some sick supplies from the store (to include massive amounts of OJ).

I'll be spending the day mixing and doing homework, so we'll see what comes of it.

Euphoria 018 THIS FRIDAY w/DJ Kalium Guestmix

Since the Friday before last was a bust due to inclement weather, Euphoria 018 is being remixed and will air this Friday, December 5th 2008 at 10pm EST (check the awesome clocks on the left to see what time that is in your part of the world).

The set will feature a 1 hour guestmix from DnB master-mixer DJ Kalium. Featuring some absolutely bomb tracks from the subgenre known as Liquid Funk, this mix will knock you off your feet and chill you to the bone. It's cold like ice, hot like fire ;)

I had a set ready for the original date, but i've since discovered some new tracks that I'll be airing, including a Chromeo remix by Laidback Luke, new track from Stratosphere, and loads more.

Rumours of my demise etc

Here's a timeline of my Friday night, with some background info first:

*Tasha was to be my special in-studio guest
*Tasha's flight lands at 8:00pm at BWI Airport in MD
*I live roughly 1 hour north of Baltimore/BWI in York, PA
*My show starts at 10pm

-4pm it begins snowing
-4:10pm omgwtf it's a goddamn blizzard
-5pm still snowing, I consider leaving immediately as the roads are getting bad and I don't want to be stuck in PA when my gf is in MD at the airport
-5:01pm snow stops, I check the roads a few times and they are clear
-6:30pm I leave for the airport
-6:31pm I hit traffic on I-83S
-8pm I have moved a total of 5 miles, and seen a total of 30 wrecked cars, roads are black ice, people sliding everywhere
-9:45pm I finally arrive at the airport
-11pm I arrive back in York, PA 1 hour late for my show, the studio is locked up as it can't be left open if no one is in the station, and I don't have a key.

So there's the story on why I missed my show this past Friday, my apologies to everyone and to DJ Kalium, whose guestmix was to air that night.

I'll be airing Euphoria 018 as well as Kalium's guestmix on December 5th 2008.

Random Fact #1: The Vocal Mix 2 (Suburban Knights)

So the one mix that really kicked it off for me was The Vocal Mix 2 (Suburban Knights). "Kicked it off" in the sense that it was a huge hit amongst not only my buddies at SHC, but also my friends from school and others in the DJ biz. After The Vocal 2 I sort of realized that not only was mixing really fun for me, but other people genuinely enjoyed listening to what I released.

So here's a bit of history about The Vocal Mix 2 (Suburban Knights),

I had gathered a nice library of new tracks since released the Vocal Mix 1 (Daydream). These tracks I soon began to divide into two folders, one entitled "The Vocal Mix 2" and the other titled "The Electro Mix 1". The electro folder was headlined by Hard-Fi - Suburban Knights (Steve Angello & Seb Ingrosso Mix), and I was totally in love with the track. I also had a few promos from my buddy Brandon Kovacs, including Mark Knight - Susan (John Dalhback Remix), as well as Victoria's bomb-mashup "If you should go songless".

I was on irc (#scrapheap ftw) and remember asking "Which sounds better 'the vocal mix 2' or 'the electro mix 1'" and the resounding answer was The Vocal Mix 2. But, I really really wanted to do the electo mix because i was excited about the tracks in that lineup. So I ended up making the vocal mix 2, but incorporating about half the "electro" tracks, including the what became the title track "Suburban Knights".

In doing so I really found what I'd been trying to do all along: fuck genres, and just make a mix of what sounds good, and call it whatever I want. Vocal, Deep, Electro, it didn't matter.

I can finally say that all soundboard issues were fixed, and the show went off without a hitch =).

Big thanks to DreamensioN for the awesome guestmix, and to everyone who tuned in.

Unfortunately, after the show, as i'm exporting the recording to an mp3, the station had a power surge (it had been raining all night). The one computer NOT plugged into the UPS was computer 4 aka the right side computer aka the recording computer. Being an old computer already, suffice to say it is now dead as a doorknob.

I have uploaded a re-mixed version of Euphoria 14, as well as dreamension's guestmix. So you can still hear the mix, just not my sexy voice (and no commercials haha). We're getting a new computer sometime this week and 1 more UPS, lol. My apologies.

Sup, how've you been? Good? Right on.

So, busy busy, classes are moving from easy mode to "hey this is just hard enough to occupy your free time". I flew up to Boston again this past weekend to visit my girlfriend, and last week I thoroughly harassed the tech guys at the station to fix the streaming issues.

This Friday is Euphoria 14, featuring a 1 hour guestmix from DreamensioN, Staff member and Resident DJ at afterhours.fm.

Euphoria 13 could have been better, the soundboard and streaming issues at the station still fucked the set a fair bit. Apologies to DJ Kalium (Reticenti) for those issues harassing his mix a fair bit. I'll be working with him to get another guestmix on Euphoria before the winter holiday break. And of course I was also a fair bit bummed, as I'd been working on Euphoria 13 for essentially the entire summer, the transitions and such are so spot on it's sick. Because the show recording is so bolloxed, here's a special recording of the set I made last week. Right Click, Save As.

Now, I've spoken with our Technical Director as well as the FM Director (<3> soundboard, and the meters now read proper outputs on the stream. I'll be heading to the studio sometime Thursday to check for myself.

Here's a peak at what I'm working on at the moment (other then Euphoria 14 of course):

-The Vocal Mix 5 (should be epic)
-currently working on a ~6 hour mix for a large LAN event in the UK with >2000 people in attendance
-The House Mix 2 (the first one was very well received, so naturally i'm working on a second =p)

-The Other Side 2 (another collection of odd songs that just don't quite fit, but are still damn good)

Best Weekend Ever, Mininova.org, and Euphoria 13

Since I first started using mininova.org to distribute my mixes via torrents, I've been trying to get a Content Distribution account on the site. This gives me free seeds from mininova servers (roughly equal to 1 seed per leecher), thus ensuring the torrent is always healthy.

This also flags the torrent as a "featured" torrent with a giant red star icon, and places it on the front page of the site in the "featured" section.

Last night I decided to release a previously un-released (to the public at least) mix to test out this new account.

Suffice to say, holy shit. Awesome.

I've always been about mixing music that I love, and sharing that passion with other people. I can only say thanks to Mininova for giving me a way to connect with even more people who like to jam the fuck out.

I'll be re-releasing all previously released DJ Exo mixes using this account, with the possible exception of the Euphoria show recordings (haven't decided yet).

Speaking of this weekend, I flew up to Boston Friday night to see my ridiculously awesome girlfriend. I had a pre-recorded mix made especially for a party her floor (the Burton Third Bombers) was having Saturday night. Suffice to say the party stretched every floor of the building, and it was pretty insane. The mix went down perfectly and there was much white-boy head bobbing to be found. The mix can be downloaded here (right click, save as). Sunday we got lunch/dinner at a great Thai place near the Charles River, and hung out at the airport for a bit before my flight.

I flew back to BWI Sunday night and was back at York around midnight. I fly back up to Boston on September 19th, a date which cannot come fast enough.

This Friday is of course Euphoria 13, and will feature a guestmix from DJ Kalium (aka Reticenti to SHC users).

ah.fm Contest Results, Another Mix, and a Sabbatical

The afterhours.fm contest results are out, and big congrats go out to CDMan14 for winning. His set will be aired September 3rd at 15:00 CET (euro time) on ah.fm. I'd like to thank ah.fm for the chance to compete and have my set reviewed by others. The judges comments on my set were as follows:

"02. awful mixing, terrible tracks.."
"02: Less noticeable than the first set. Mid-level energy, some vocals. Songless, The Legacy 2.0. Some odd track selection (Revolution) made it seem uneven, it didn't particularly appeal to me."
"Set 2: Yawn fest"

Overall I can't say I disagree with the judges, it was definitely a yawn fest in the beginning but it picked up by the end for sure. I suppose the judge tuned out by then, fair enough. "Awful mixing, terrible tracks" is so vague I can't really garner any constructive criticism from that, but it definitely was one of my shittier mixes, so again fair point. Big thanks to the second judge for actually taking the time to say something useful haha. I understand what he means by mid-level energy, less noticeable, and the uneven track selection. Much to improve on.

And that's exactly what I'll be working on for the next few months. After today, I'll be taking a few months off from releasing mixes, and instead I'll be focusing on:

-Euphoria shows
-track progression
-track selection
-beatmatching
-mixing

I'll consider this a sabbatical, and I won't be releasing any new mixes until I feel i'm at where I want to be. I will of course continue to mix live for Euphoria.

Euphoria 12, new Soundboard FTL

Well, I'd love to be able to post that Euphoria 12 went off without a hitch and it was epic and whatnot. Unfortunately we hit a few snags, but thankfully they're all fixable before Euphoria 13.

As you may know, we've gotten some new equipment in the FM booth including a new soundboard. While being sexy, simple to use, and awesome, there's a faulty cable connecting the soundboard to the streaming computer. Because of this, the stream is sent in mono (ie, only out of your right speaker) instead of stereo (both speakers). The stream also fizzled a fair bit and died on occasion.

I informed the boss lady and this should be fixed before Monday.

Big thanks to everyone in #scrapheap and #euphoria who helped me troubleshoot and let me know when i was broadcasting dead air.

Because of the standards I hold my Euphoria shows to, I won't be releasing a tracklist for this set, and I won't be releasing the recording (shitty mono anyways). I'll make some changes to the tracklist and remix the set for Euphoria 13, with proper streaming.

Euphoria 13 will be Friday September 12th, and will feature a DnB guestmix from DJ Kalium (aka Reticenti from SHC). There will be no Euphoria next Friday (September 5th) because i'll be flying up to Boston that night to spend the weekend with my girlfriend, Tasha. God fucking damn I can't wait to see her again. Apologies for taking a show off after a shitty night like tonight.

As usual when things to fubar, I'll make it up to you with a mix within the next week. I've got a few tracks i've been wanting to spin together anyways =p.

Emo Artist Bullshit

You are about to read some.

Well, we're now only a week away from restarting the Euphoria season, with the live-mixed goodness of Euphoria 12. As with most of my Euphoria shows, I try to have a general track selection laid out before I start the show, and I test out some mixes to see how the songs work together. Then while live-mixing it's all about hitting those transition just right.

With this new 3 hour format, and with the shit tons of experience in mixing and transitions i've gained over the summer, I reached a sort of artistic crisis when working on Euphoria 12. What should the set sound like? What should go in it?

Maybe it should be all euphoric trance, for which the show is named. I mean, I love euphoric trance. Why not do 2 hours of that every week? (remember the 1st hour is always a guestmix).

Right then, maybe a set in the flavor of AH.FM? I've learned a lot from listening to their shows, and the set i turned in for their august competition (results should be released soon). I really enjoy spinning solid progressive trance sets, it really has a new flavor and a crisp, edgy, and still uplifting feel to it.

But then again, there are those certain random tracks that are technically "House" or "Electronica" that have a distinctive vibe. They make me want to rob a bank, buy some CDJs, dj at a club, play the track, drop the lights, kick on the lasers, and enjoy those 5-6 minutes of absolute bliss. "Make you want to move"? Fuck that, these tracks shift tectonic plates.

And on top of all this, another thing to consider. Despite all my work, practice, etc in the newer mixes, the two that I always here as people's favorites are "This is kinda fuckin' loud" and "The Vocal Mix 2 - Suburban Knights". So thought to myself, what do these 2 sets have in common that everyone loves so much?

The answer?

I loved those sets too. I had the most fun spinning those sets. Those were both sets where I had 10 or 12 tracks that I absolutely loved but that didn't fit together at all, and I said "fuck it, let's mix this shit" and I did.

So really, I guess the secret to a great mix (at least for this DJ) is to pick the tracks that I like best, and make them work. And by the power of greyskull, they'll work.

And that's exactly what I plan to do with Euphoria 12, and many thereafter. In keeping with my show's tagline, "Trance, House, Electronica", the show will feature a smooth blend of all three. I've chosen tracks that make me want to throw the fuck down all night, and get truly tranced out.

Boston, School, Euphoria 12

Damn it's been a little while since i've blogged so bam here it is. I'm currently in Boston, MA with my girlfriend helping her move into her dorm and hanging out a bit during her pre-orientation before she kicks off her first year of college proper.

This is my first time in Boston, and god damn do I love this city. My girlfriend's dorm has a beautiful view overlooking the Charles River, the weather is temperate and never too hot, and the humidity is nothing compared to Maryland.

A good friend of mine, "T-Rev", has recently picked up a pair of CDJ-800s and a mixer, so needless to say I am pumped to get in a day or too playing with those puppies before heading back to school. This friend has also offered to essentially share this equipment with me and whenever I want to use it, I can either come over or he'll bring it to wherever I am. I foresee many a session of live-mixing and hands-on-learning with T-Rev into the wee hours of the morning. I'm looking forward to finally acquiring some hardware knowledge.

I've also recently begun using MixMeister, which I can definitely say is one of the most powerful mix-creation tools i've seen. It allows a ridiculous amount of control when mixing. However, I can see it being abused by DJs who are live-mixing with software, and as such I'll stick to using VDJ when live-mixing, but expect all kinds of new tricks from my Vocal and Deep mixes.

Speaking of mixes, I'm also considering starting a new line or two of mixes, I am ever-improving my mixing skills and these days I play around with the software for a few hours and find that sitting in front of me I have a perfectly good mix I could release. I'd love to start getting these out there for you guys to listen to. I'll probably start doing this once Euphoria kicks off again this fall.

Speaking of Euphoria (HOLY SEGWAYS BATMAN), as mentioned previously, my first show will be FRIDAY AUGUST 29TH, 10PM TO 1AM. The first hour will be a guestmix from Victoria, the second and third hours will be good home-cooked live DJ Exo goodness.

First Fall 2008 Show Date, New Show Slot, and Guestmixes

I've been trying to get my current show slot (Saturday nights 10pm to 1am EDT) switched because I have a job I'd like to work at Saturdays and Sundays in Maryland, and a Saturday show in York, PA is right smack between these days.

I've successfully gotten myself a new slot, luckily another DJ was in the same dilemma, and my show will now be on Friday nights, 10pm to 1am EDT. I can't express how much this kicks ass, and I hope that this time slot will work better for some people then the Saturday one.

My first show will be FRIDAY AUGUST 29TH, 10PM TO 1AM EDT. The first hour will be a guestmix from Victoria, currently a resident DJ at Afterhours.fm. Her set is guaranteed to get everyone's blood pumping.

Because my fall slot is a 3 hour slot, the first hour of every show will be a guestmix from up-and-coming DJs and producers. So far I have guestmixes planned from Hodel, The Oxygen Junkies, Brandon Kovacs, DreamensioN, DJ Space Ghost, DJ Kalium, DJ Ramz, JzL, and George Vemag. I'm sure they'll be a few more before the season's out =).

ah.fm Contest Update, What is Professional?

Yesterday morning I finally submitted my set for the ah.fm August DJ contest.

On a coffee high, I was up till almost 3am Thursday night mixing and recording the set, and overall I was very pleased with it. Friday morning the thread on ah.fm went up announcing the August contest, and I happily submitted my mix. This morning I received a reply e-mail from ah.fm, stating:

"hi,

reading your homepage, it looks like you have a weekly show on an FM radio. unfortunately i have to tell you that under the new rules, this disqualifies you from participating in the contest.

cheers"

The new rules state that no professional DJs may enter the contest, specifically,

"Professional DJ is defined as: resident in any club or any other venue now or less than 6 months ago; resident on any online radio now or less than 6 months ago; and/or two or more releases on any EDM record label."

I was aware of these rules before entering, and decided that given the station I work for is an FM broadcast station, and not an online radio station, I was still eligible. Furthermore, the station I am a resident at is not a Trance station, and I am in fact the only Trance/Electronica DJ that is an FM resident here.

As found in my blog here and on my website, I have been dj'ing for 2 years, and am self-taught. I have never touched a CDJ or a mixer, and I have never dj'd in a club. I do everything you hear on VirtualDJ, a dj'ing software platform.

Because of all this, I thought surely I did not qualify as a "Professional" DJ.

I have sent a reply to ah.fm's contest staff and await a reply.

Once the mix is recorded I'll release the track listing in a blog post, but the mix won't be available for download until mid to late August, as mentioned before.

It Has Begun

As mentioned previously, I'll be competing in the monthly DJ'ing competition for August at afterhours.fm. I mix a set, submit it, yada yada yada....PROFIT!

It's also been quite a while since I released a mix, and sometime in mid-August (once winners are announced) I'll post this promotional set for download. But for now, IT HAS BEGUN

I've been previewing tracks and whatnot for over a month now, and I'm finally starting to get to the point where I've got 2 songs that I like enough to string together and do some test-mixing.

I'll blog sometime this weekend with some general "whothefuckcares" updates.
